Is Turkey The Next China For Replica Watches

While China remains the primary global hub for the manufacturing of counterfeit goods, including replica watches, Turkey plays a significant and well-documented role, particularly in their distribution and sale. It’s interesting to note that we have seen a rise in the assembly/finishing of replica watches and even well known superreps coming from the region from time to time. I remember back in 2013/2014 there were a few Panerai reps that hit the market of exceptional quality that hailed from Turkey. It was those particular watches that prompted this topic. Let’s dive in to Turkey’s current role:

  • Distribution and Transit Hub: Turkey is widely recognized as a major transit country for counterfeit goods, including watches, especially those destined for European markets. Its strategic geographic location between Europe and the Middle East, combined with advanced logistics infrastructure, makes it a key distribution and shipment route. Reports from organizations like the OECD and EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) have consistently ranked Turkey as a high-risk country for counterfeit exports, often placing it as the second-largest source of counterfeit trade after China.
  • Sales to Tourists: Popular tourist destinations and markets within Turkey, such as Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, are well-known for the widespread and open sale of replica watches (and other counterfeit luxury goods). Tourists are often a primary target for these sales, with vendors openly advertising “genuine fakes” or “super clones.”
  • Local Production (Assembly/Finishing): While large-scale, intricate movement manufacturing for replicas is primarily centered in China, there’s evidence to suggest that Turkey is involved in the assembly, finishing, and potentially some component production of counterfeit goods, including watches. Experts and local observations indicate that imitation products are made and sold within the country, ranging in quality. Some higher-end replicas might even be assembled or finished in Turkey using movements and parts sourced from other regions.
  • Economic and Cultural Factors: The prevalence of counterfeit goods in Turkey is influenced by several factors:
    • Cultural Acceptance: There’s a notable cultural acceptance of counterfeit goods as a norm in many parts of Turkey, where the ethical and legal implications of intellectual property infringement are often overlooked by consumers and even some producers.
    • Economic Conditions: Economic factors, such as the depreciation of the Turkish Lira and inflation, can increase the demand for more affordable, albeit fake, alternatives to luxury goods.
    • Weak Enforcement: Despite being a party to international IP conventions, enforcement of intellectual property laws in Turkey has been cited as inconsistent or less effective in practice, particularly in bustling market environments where counterfeit trade thrives.
  • Illicit Trade and Money Laundering: The large-scale, unregistered trade in both genuine and imitation watches in Turkey has attracted scrutiny from financial authorities. Investigations have uncovered vast illegal trade networks, with concerns about tax evasion and potential links to money laundering and organized crime, as luxury goods like watches can be used to transport large sums of undeclared wealth.

In essence, while not the production hub that China currently holds title to, Turkey serves as a significant nexus in the global replica watch trade, acting as both a point of sale and a transit hub, with some level of local production and finishing contributing to the supply. Whether or not that changes in anyone’s guess but I’d bet we see full production replica watches coming out of Turkey in the not so distant future.
